Back when I was in high school, I invented my own recipe for quiche: I pressed biscuit dough into muffin tins, filled each with a mixture of eggs, turkey, and squash, and baked it in the oven. So when we started the Iron Chef challenge, I knew I wanted to make a quiche, but I thought I should find something a little more sophisticated. Eventually I decided on Mini Wonton Quiches for my first recipe...and found out that my high school recipe was remarkably similar!
I followed the recipe fairly closely, but since I don't like ham, I substituted chopped mushrooms instead. If I were to make it again, I would probably add cheese, too. But cooking with the wonton wrappers was a lot of fun, and they ended up with a perfect crunchy texture. (Expect to see more wonton recipes this year!) Although the recipe says to "press the wonton wrappers into each cup," I actually found it worked better to pinch the bottom of the wrapper first.
We still needed a main dish, though. Going with the Asian theme, I decided to make fried rice. Nothing super fancy, but still tasty. I added mushrooms to this recipe, as well. However, I guesstimated how long it would take to cook them, and they ended up slightly underdone. Neither Jordan nor I really love green peas, so I don't know why I used them...but I guess it was nice to see some green on our plates!
One of the things that amazes me about the real Iron Chef show is how they prepare five courses, all at once. It was hard enough to balance two! (I had planned to take pictures of the entire cooking process, but ended up just taking one at the beginning and one at the end. Also, my photos are not quite as fancy as Jana's--sorry!) But hopefully I can become an even more coordinated chef as the year goes on...and maybe even a better photographer/Photoshopper.
As for the reception...I think Jordan was just impressed that I didn't burn anything. But he went back for several more wontons and even looked forward to the leftover fried rice. All in all, it was a good first try!
Yummy, yummy (minus the mushrooms for me)
ReplyDeletethose are the cutest little wonton quiches. i guess my quiche knowledge is limited; those actually look pretty good!
ReplyDeleteok, my question is... did you use the same skillet for cooking all of the fried rice? i always try, but find the timing too difficult, and have to pull out another dish.
BTW... i totally agree about the coordination of multiple dishes, I'm doing good to have one "fancy" dish at a time.
Umm...I used a skillet and a little pot. I cooked the rice first, in the pot. Then I cooked the egg on the skillet, and set it aside in the same little pot that I cooked the rice in. Then I cooked it all in the skillet (mushrooms, carrots, green onions, rice, peas, soy sauce, eggs)
